Movig air in the house

I just use two box fans set on low to move heat. The best round/box fans are the older ones if you can find them in safe working condition. They turn slow and move more volume of air at a slower rate (it seems) ,the newer fans turn to fast and seem to cool the air alot.
 
I have a tower fan from WalMart right now in the living room. The fireplace is in the middle of the house with halls, living and dining rooms surrounding it.

My wife does not like the speed it operates on, she says that she can feel the air movement. I think it is the drafty windows.

BTW, I'm near 7 ft tall, so many options are not for me :) thanks for all the ideas.

I've thought about using the furnace blower, but the furnace is 15 y/o, and I'm concerned about running it continuously. I like the % timer idea, that may work for me. Are there some that can be put in line with the thermostat?
