Muffler Mod Outlet Question

When doing an "easy" muffler mod (ie not fabricating a side outlet and deflector) I see some guys just put a hole or holes in the muffler and others weld or braze in a straight pipe fitting (or fittings). Does the fitting serve any purpose other than adding to the aesthetics?

Directing the flow of gasses. Putting a hole in the muffler doesn’t always mean gas will com out at a right angle from the muffler.

Yeah, I think it's more about directing the flow of the exhaust.

The hole only saws I've seen did seem louder/more crackly so that makes sense.

Jred 2166 chip cleaner. To your point, my loudest saws are my Echo 590s, no tube, just a straight shot, VERY loud.
