On Monday, I struck a deal with a CL'er on a grime covered 028 AV Super, after a long, but scenic round trip. The ad said it "works great" (but I suspect the ad was made by the wife unit).

When I met the CL'er, he said that he tried to get it to run the night before, but it wouldn't run. It came in a Stihl case, and was pretty greasy. But, looking at the lack of wear on the handlebar, and the minimal sooting on the front around the muffler, I could tell, it wasn't used a ton, in the many years it sat in that case. He said it was his grandfather's and when he got it, really didn't use it, since he doesn't cut wood. We made the deal, and home I went.

The airfilter was actually reuseable. I just put it a new fuel hose and fuel filter, plug, fuel vent and fuel/oil cap seals, and fresh fluids. I put a new RM chain on this bar, and stuck it on another saw, and this one got the new 18" Stihl bar and another new RM chain.

After putting it all back together, it runs just great! PSI was almost 150 before I had it running, so it was dry and cold at that time. Haven't cut with it yet, but it tach tuned well, and the idle was pretty solid. I have a rim sprocket conversion for it, and an impulse line on order. After that, I may do the crank seals just because, and I have a carb kit for it too. Other than that, its ready to cut! Oh, and I should have taken a pic of the case after the purple power treatment....it looks almost new too!

Nice job on the clean up. I did one awhile back for my BIL. I did replace the crank seals on it because it had sat a long time. I used the OEM seals and not after market.

Once again nice job.

wow that plastic sure came out well. That saw looks excellent. Any idea as to the age of that saw?

Yeah! Didn't even clearcoat this one. Just a gentle cleaning and a shot of pledge and a buff off!

The case it came in has a date of 1989, so I am assuming somewhere in that area.

Thanks for the comments guys!

That's one nice 028. I sold mine a few months back, now I want to find another clean one. Great job.

Hi,
What do you use to clean the saws? I can never seem to get mine up that well!
Cheers

I use Super Clean tough task in the spray bottle, and a series of brushes. Its in a purple bottle, in the auto section at WM. It cleans like crazy! Then, if the plastic is dulled, I spray on some Maxima SC1 platic detailer. It is a product for motocross plastic. It is harder to come by, buy you could use pledge furniture polish with ok results.

Thanks for the complments guys! I just had this saw out yesterday. Drained the fuel and ran it dry for storage.

that saw looks amazing. i'm jealous. the first saw i ever bought was a used 028 when i was a poor college kid. seeing yours brings back a lot of good memories. thanks for the pics. those 028's were really good firewooders. nice job!
