Nasty soft maple

Todays project was to safely fall this large maple with a top to bottom spiral twist. I was the third tree service to look at the tree, first guy wanted to set a block and tackle set up to pull it, second wanted to use a pickup winch. I thought that as tall and beefy as it was it required a larger pulling method. Customer liked the dozer idea and gave me the go ahead. Brought in a cat d4e (28k pound dozer w/ 40k winch. Used my bucket to set chokers 45' up and apply several 3/8" chain and binders to hold the halves together. Then the cable was tensioned and the tree was fell safely. And a very happy homeowner even gave me a fat tip for a job well done.

I was the 3rd tree guy to look at it. He liked my idea of pulling with equipment rather than with a rope winch or a pickup winch. After watching that d4 grunt a little, I'm glad I choose the dozer.
