Steve here... Forgot to mention, we have a similar looking Red Oak, down the road at the school. Has the same big split all the way down the trunk, from a lightning strike last summer... it's still alive , but it looks like hell, some of the upper limbs are dead now too. It's kind of a shame... b4 the strike it had no issues
