Hello! I have an older Stihl that was gifted to me for lack of running. I think it might be an 046 but not sure, I could use your expertise. I cleaned it up, washed the air filter and muffler out and replaced the spark plug. Compression is up at 160-163ish! I put it back together and it runs great! It just doesn't turn off. Let me know if there is a specific shot/serial number that would help.

Ok sorry about that. Not a great first post. There is a vacant electrical connector on the off switch that seems wrong to me, yet there are no unconnected wires. the wires from the ignition module seem to connect to that LED but not the off switch. Well there is one wire. I'm not experienced enough to know if there should be two.

Well I'm not good at identifying over pics. I'd say 064! :) If thats the case. Look me up I'm interested! Lol.

064 would be great! It certainly is a heavy beast!

This has to be the culprit. But what wire to where?

You are all wrong... Miller... Jeeze you must still be blind...

Too big to be 044/046. And you're wiring rats nest may be the problem but it also tells you what saw it is. You're disconnected wire is the ground wire to shut off the saw so yes that is the culprit of the no stop issue.

066 Redlight. Look familiar?

Also the digital "atom" symbol on the AF cover with the red lightning bolt gives it away.

Also it looks like an early flat top cylinder which is the best for power out of all the OEM Stock cylinders.

Lol. I didn't even notice the red light. I was just thinking if he thought it maybe an 046. The 064 is close to that size. New it wasn't an 046 or 044

I'll give you a pass this time since you are visually hampered right now. We need to get the wives on a double date some time soon and trade some stuff. :)

Thanks nstueve! Obviously I'm new to the big Stihls. I usually run the smaller saws for trail work. 066! Wow! Pretty good gift! So when I put the saw back together i must have put those two black wires together. I swear that was the way they were though. So how do I put this right?

stihlsplice.jpg Thanks PioneerGuy! So all I need to do is splice in the missing connection as in this sketch. I was thinking as much but I didn't want to sizzle any electronics by doing the wrong thing.

Yes, all you need is a wire that leads to a ground on the metal engine crankcase, either splice in where you indicated or just run a new wire to a good ground screw. If you trace that yellow wire back under the recoil it should be connected under one of the screws that hold the coil/module in place. I have seen more than one saw that the owner had cut and jury rigged wires incorrectly so it might be wise to just remove the recoil cover and take a peek at where that yellow wire is connected, one just never knows what has been done to a saw by others.

I'm curious if that's not an 064 with a replaced filter cover. Measure the bore, 52mm vs 54mm.
I dont think they made 064 red lights did they? I have only seen 066's but could be wrong. Keep in mind the age of the saw and that the wires are jacked up. Just saying that if the wiring has been worked on what else was changed? or was it a collection of random 064/066 parts mashed together? who knows till you check... Good suggestion by mnsam!

Well that means your saw was meant to run lol. Check all ground wires and contact and also pull ur sparking plug out, go under out ur coil with alligator clips and spin engine over with a drill and se if it still sparks. That will eliminate the coil out of the equation
