Someone is messing with you and if it was me I would get to the bottom of that. I have had many saws and tools shipped here via all major carries UPS. USPS, FedEx, and of course DHL/Emery. I never paid an import fee, duty, tax or anything (other than shipping). One member questioned me on it accusing me of undervaluing items to $50. I dug out a receipt and customs declaration for a shipment valued at $900 in US dollars and no duties were paid. I have all the customs forms here for a recent $1400 shipment and not one cent was paid in duties.
They may have paid the import fee on There end, like I said the shipper has that option. I’d say no one’s messing with me as ups was the one with the fee it’s not like I sent it to a king in India lol😂.

I get stuff from all over the world and haven’t had to pay any duties or import fees, ever.
I think I read somewhere that there was a $800 threshold on valuation before import duties came into the picture. (That might be a Germany thing) Although, I’ve had shipments far exceeding that come thru without duties.

When I get home tonight I will ask another to give his input as he is well versed in the subject.

People ask me all the time if there is any duties or taxes. That is why I put that down. I know for a fact if I use certain couriers they will charge a brokerage and a duty for a German saw from Canada to the US. That is also why I put that down.
Thanks for some clarification. I assume you use Canada post/usps to avoid this?

I do not believe I have ever recived a saw from outside North America that WAS shipped USPS and I have never paid a duty. All come in through international companies.

Not sure what to tell ya Bill, my guess is the shipper paid it, or just like he said there is a fee with certain carriers if he uses them. Or maybe if they declare the value over a certain dollar amount 🤷‍♂️, Really wondering if it’s a certain declared dollar amount.

Well I keep many of my customs forms and the declared values. I am hoping David can share some light. It is 4:41AM in his area if you are near Indy or 5:51AM if you change times. It is sad Bob Cornwell has passed away as he could add a AUS perspective. I am not sure if @scallywag is still active as he has sent high end stuff here from AUS. How about @Robin Wood as I believe he is in southeast Asia and most certainly sends high dollar saws to the USA. Another fine member is @ken morgan in Japan. I am not sure what he has sent back to what I think is his home state of Indiana.

I don’t think I ever had any fees from Dan in Greece either. Maybe it’s just our northern neighbors being greedy 🤪.
That is quite possible. I truly do not know. I am not trying to argue with anyone in the slightest. We all need to share the tidbits we experience to help each other. That is what this site was based on many years ago and what has made it such a great site.

So Canadians don't charge any tax to the us. But the brokerage company can for the US government when there is no Free Trade Agreement like with germany. It is with full declared value. Anything I sell on eBay gets charged sales tax depending on what each state charges I think there's one or two states that don't charge any online tax. So that is a big difference from buying off me directly.

Ebay is 100% different. They charge sales tax on all sales in the US. They also charge final value fees with the sales tax included. The tax the tax.
