New used MS460 with pictures

Got the saw last week, I cleaned the saw and replaced the sprocket ring, chain (I filed and cleaned the 25" bar), spark plug, and I cleaned the air filter. There was so much saw dust inside the saw that the "STOP" bottom position was not engaging, after I cleaned the saw it worked fine.

I have a few questions please.

1. Approximately what year is the saw? s/n is 165841922.

2. The saw is leaking oil, see photo. Could the leak due to the inner guide plate?

3. I checked compression, it was 155, but it took many pools to get there, is that normal?

4. I tried to tune it with the tachometer but it only got up to 13,200 on average. It wood fluctuate between 13000 to 13500. I could never get it to rev above 13,500, and could not get it to rev constantly at 13,500? Could there be a problem with the saw or it is just in the tuning?

I did some cuts in hard maple, it cuts well but I could hear the saw changing RPM from time to time, I tuned it more after but I did use it yet.

You'll have to clean some of that up so you can find the oil leak. There is way too much oil and gunk there to try to guess where the leak is.

Oil Leak: Were you running it alot outside of the wood to get a tach reading? If so the oil probably just pooled there as it came off the chain (my 066) does the exact same thing. If you had only been cutting wood you would never have noticed any extra oil.

Compression: That is a good number. But still pull the muffler off and have a look at the piston for scoring.

RPM: My tach does the same thing regardless of the saw. I never get the exact same numbers, it is always a range +- a few hundred rpm.

The oil leak looks alot like mine. I found that the oil line from the tank to be old and hard. I put a new line that pretty much stopped the oil leaking. It still makes a mess but only when I use it, it will leak whats in the cover after use. Good luck

I was tuning the saw on that cookie for a while! But when I leave the saw in 1 place next morning there would be a few drops, maybe more, on that spot.

Is it really necessary to check for scoring if the compression is good?

155lbs , its not scored. May have a few fine line scraches in it but certainly nothing to be concerend about if its got that much compression...

Good lookin saw. It does not matter how many times you pull to get the comp reading. Gauges with longer hoses will take more pulls to compress all the air in the hose. The rpm is about where it should be. Like others said, if you were tach'n it, the oil will build up around the clutch cover. Clean it good, then cut some wood and see if it still does it.

Thanks. Yes I run it on a few cuts and there is almost no oil at all, I have the oiler set at ~ 1/3 with the 25" bar.

I just took a few movie clips, I will try to post them, not sure how yet. Tomorrow I will run it against the 372XP to compare.

I have been bucking with the saw and there is no notible oil dripping , I am very happy about that, thank you for the great information guys. I will try to post a few videos, this is the first time so hopefully it will work.

Tonight I was cutting with the MS460 for an hour or two, what a nice saw, real pleasure to cut with. I also made two more log benches, I made 4 all together the first two with the 372XP. The log was ~6' long and ~20" in diameter of hard maple, its amazing how powerful this saw is.

It was really fun.
