I live in Connecticut and have a 80+ ft. Norway Spruce and the top has begun to die. This started several years ago and the die-back is progressing down the trunk so that there are dead branches down perhaps 15 feet but some active growth in this top region too. This is a very important tree for our property and want to save it if at all possible. I have several questions:
1) Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? I suspect either insects or a lightning strike. Will it eventually kill the entire tree?
2) Can I successfully cut approx. 20 feet off this tree without killing it so that I remove all affected wood?
The rest of the tree is very healthy.
