Is there any rule of thumb for how often one should change the hydraulic oil in a splitter? Or will it pretty much work for ever as long as the filter is changed regularly?

It really depends on how much dirt can get in the system. I change the filters every year, I changed the oil in my splitter 3 years ago just because....it still looked good though. I change the oil in my chipper once a year, and my log skidder leaks enough it is "self changing".:jawdrop:

My dad bought the Brave splitter new

back in about 1980 new.. It has no filter, has never had the oil changed.and it works just like it did back when it was new.,
The engine oil has been changed every year though.
It has not split a lot of wood though. he only burned 25-30 face cords a year. LOL I burn about the same.
