ok to remove dead section from Italian Cypress?

One of my Italian Cypress trees has a section that has died, about 1/4th of the circumference, about 10" high. I presume some sort of mite or insect caused the damage, which I'm looking into. My question is whether it's ok to cut away the dead section.

Very advisable to remove dead portions, as they may have disease. Several things you can do to minimize the resulting disfigurement; post a picture if you want.
