Someone must have run this saw lean or without oil at some point because when I got it (for free and locked up), the cylinder has the plating melted off in a few spots. I was hoping it was just piston transfer but not quite.

Could I hone it, throw a new piston in it and run the saw or would I be wasting my time/money? The plating is thick enough that the piston ring would likely catch (probably 0.020" thick) if run as is (with the plating missing in spots).

A serviceable C5 cylinder shouldn’t be that hard to source.

No way should you run one with the plating pealing up. New rings would just catch it and roll it up.

@sawnami

Probably what I'll try to do if I can find a usable P/C combo cheap enough. I was thinking I could hone the plating off but as another person said, the bare aluminum probably wouldn't last long.
