Hi all.
I'm looking to buy a house in Texas where it seems there's a tree next to every foundation. I'm actually trying to learn to ID trees, but I'd like opinions on the following photos and if these 2 trees pose an issue even if they're removed. I suppose it's impossible to say for sure, but I thought to get some feedback. Note, the first two photos are the same tree (a crepe myrtle?) next to a pier and beam foundation.

From just a home owner perspective I’d personally take both of those out, especially the tree in the back with the porch rapped around it, take that out now while it’s still not massive. I’m sure the roots are trying to get into any crack in the foundations. For the ID of the trees I can not help there as I’m not familiar with the trees in Texas

I would definitely take them out. I really like this house, but if they've already caused a big enough problem, I'd rather avoid buying it. I did read that crepe Myrtles are noninvasive, but I don't know about the other tree. Thanks for your reply!

The pink one looks like a crape myrtle….
I do think it is. I understand they're generally not a problem, but I would still take it out. I am more concerned about the other tree, so I thought someone might know something about it if they can make it out. Thank you for your reply!

That other one looks like a magnolia…can’t be sure…but yes, they have to go….

Live in the house for a year, experience the seasons with the trees. Enjoy the flowers and shade also consider the debris and maintenance. Then make your informed decision on the future of the trees.

Good thoughts. I actually like these trees, but my main concern is any damage they could cause, and especially from the Magnolia if it's really a problem at this size. I had to sell a house due to foundation issues, so I may be overly cautious. I don't think the crepe myrtle will grow anymore and I understand it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for your reply.

Get a home inspection or at the very least get a foundation specialist to look at the house for possible problems. You didn't say whether it is a slab, crawl space or basement. Each of those could have their own set of issues with the tree roots. It would be money well spent or ask the seller to do it as part of the contact. Standard procedure here. Good luck 👍🏻 At least you would know what if any expense might be incurred and it should be negotiated with the seller. The tree removal would be the least of your potential costs.

Good points. It is a crawl space, which I should have mentioned. Thanks for your reply.
