Pear tree fungus

None of the pictures of the lichen look like what is on my Asian Pear tree. It seems to be more of a fungus.

How can I safely get rid of this?

If it is a fungus then it is feeding on dead wood, it may go away when all the "food" is gone, and leave a cavity.

Can only guess without a pic. Like the saying says. "a picture is worth..." and we can ony put in 1000 charitcters!
