We own several acres of forested land that has thinned due to recent drought and beetle infestation. We want to replant using living Christmas tree stock that usually goes on sale the week after Christmas. These pines can be aleppo, elderica and others (but unfortunately, we seldom see ponderosa which is naive to the area). We have been told that certain species will not live at the altitude (6500 ft) and we are are hesitant to "just stick anything in the ground." The low water conditions over the summer will no longer be a factor as we now have a well and can water when necessary.

Which trees would be most suited?

Thanks.

Whatever you replant, keep in mind the previous beetle infestation. Those guys are not completely gone! I'd find out what type of beetle you had and plant stock that is not succeptible to that type of beetle.
Other than that, I could only recommend checking with your local Agricultural Extension Service (County Government) or other local growers. We don't have 6500' elevations here in Florida!
