You can put it anywhere downstream of the "P" Port on the pump and get an accurate reading. Putting it on the "A" port on the valve will give you the Splitting pressure and not the return pressure (which is how most do it).

I noticed tonight that right in the back of the cylinder there is a allen cap right in the casting would that be a place to mount the gauge, or is that small fitting to bleed air ect.?

better to put the gauge between pump and valve, or on the valve inlet section. Then you can measure pump load in extend and retract.
Gauge is more valuable than just for setting maximum relief valve in extend. Also tells you about the unloading pressure, and the detent kickout in retract. But if it is on the cylinder closed end, only get half the info.
