I am trying to propagate Horse Chestnut Trees (Aesculus Hippocastanum) with no success whatsoever. I planted the chestnuts in seed raising mixture in early spring and they simply rotted away. I planted them about 1.5 to 2cm deep in individual 16cm pots and allowed them to be watered naturally by rain. Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

Here is how I start buckeyes from seed.

Harvest the follen nuts in the fall. Cut a small section of the inner shell (1/4 inch x 1/4 inch). Plant in a small pot in native soil. Then plant the pot in the ground for the winter.

The nuts need about 3-4 months of cold temps. to germinate.
