Red Japanese Maple

I am new at gardening, but I love my Japanese Maple ( I believe it is a
miniature)
There are a few branches that need to be whacked off . When is it a good
time to do a little pruning?
It is a healthy tree with nice leaves and willowy.
Can I do it now ?
