Thats a photo from the 2000 fire season. Thats the Bitterroot river in SW Montana. The Photo was taken by one of the division supervisors on that fire. I guess the Elk werent really running but hung out in the river for a while till things cooled down. Ive seen elk cows claving in our burn units shortly after we've blackened them. They roll around in the ash and it supposedly keeps the ticks down to a minimum.
Used to have a picture of a calf up close about two hours after its birth. I'll see if i can find it and post it.
