They tend to grow in the sandiest of soils, hence the name. Shorter needles than the slash pine and the wood is not as heavy (less moisture).
I would think that a minimal approach would do best with these trees. They naturally grow in nutrient-poor, dry sand. Overwatering or overfertilizing would surely kill them quicker than leaving them alone.
I never tried to grow any, so this is just an educated guess.
