I don't intentionally burn fences... The trees along the old farm fence lines keep dying... The back property line at my parents' property has a rubble stone wall and old fencing that constrained dairy cows. There were cows there up until about 66-68 years ago. We last maintained those fences about 50 years ago... this to keep the kids on motorcycles and minibikes from using our yard as a short cut instead of going another couple hundred yards and using the old dirt farm road. Over time the motorcycles and mini bikes disappeared (no trikes or 4 wheelers back then). Now the municipality has fines and confiscation laws that make is a very expensive proposition to ride those things on the road so they've disappeared... except for a few golf carts which will surely be targeted next!hi Griz - naw, not barbed wire! we don''t burn our fences!! lol..... in the metal pail, pine needles. in the hearth expanded metal to keep hot coals up in the fire. i see u have large spaces between urs.
I think the photo exaggerates the grate spacing... it's actually the best spacing I've used! When I was a kid we had andirons, no grate. The other fireplaces had grates with various spaces... some too big and one that was so small it clogged up and was ineffective.
