Slip on 4 way splitting wedge

I have a NorthStar splitter and bought the 4 way slip over wedge. I noticed that it has caused some gouges in the main splitting wedge on the machine. Has anyone else had this problem and do you bother filing or sharpening the main wedge and what do you use. Thanks!
