I have the 170 and 025. They are both my go to saws but they are very different. I have an 18 inch bar on the 025 and it has no problem with it. $159 for a 170 is hard to pass up. Just buy the upgraded carburetor and when the autotune starts acting up toss it.
2 days ago, a friend of mine gave me an Ms 170 with a dirty carb, broken handlebar, and break handle because he knows how much I love fixing junk saws. I'm still waiting for the plastics to arrive, but that lil saw screeeaams! I found my 025 in the woods. It was sitting so long, I had to dig it out of the ground. The oiler had failed and there was a crack in the crankpan which is why it was abandoned. The engine base was burnt up on the clutch side from the oiler failure. Carb and seals decayed. After replacing the failed parts, and adding a couple mods, it's gotta be the coolest 025 in town! Here's pics. Sorry I don't have a pic of the 025 at first find. That would've been the right way.

I wouldnt mind an older saw like the 025 any one have any connections on getting a good one ? And on the 170 I havent heard much good about them are they better then all the bad rumors I've heard I know it's a home owner saw and I'm more of a pro saw kinda guy
I've got over 40 saws. A piece of plastic broke on the handle of my climbing saw, so the lanyard wouldn't work. I ran into Southern States and the 170's were on sale for $159. This was two summers ago. I go through 5 gallons of mix a month, sometimes more, so I'm not a use it every couple months homeowner. I've got lots of better, more expensive saws, but, that little 170 turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. I take care of my equipment, but I don't baby it. I've had it buried in Oak as long as the bar, and just let it go at it's speed, don't lean on it. I won't argue with anyone there are better saws, but for $159 dollars, I vote for the 170.

MS170/180 are nothing more than cheap throw away saws. If you're fine with that, they're cheap. If you want a decent saw, look at a MS250. If you want a great saw, look at the MS241 and MS261.
Brad, you are right, the 170 is a throw away saw. That's why I bought mine. I needed a climbing saw quick, so I bought one. Now, for the life of me, the darn little thing won't die. I've come to like the little bugger. If it ever dies I'll probably go back to one of my Super EZ's now that I've got two runners.
