I'll start choking my safty up so im close to the tree when they start getting 4" or so. and keep your feet one higher then the other to help stabilize ya. If I have to for what ever reason go up higher and smaller, no shame in using a pole saw.
When I first learned to climb they reserved tall bean poles and sap trees for the new guys. it was coming for them to wind test a new guy 80ft up a skinny bean pole. after putting in the tipping line the crew would all pull on the rope , as the new climber would scream in fear. I remember when it was done to me, as i bear hugged the tree for dear life, with my eyes close, I heard someone laugh saying, his back pockets are touching.
