Starting a ms290 chainsaw my helper was engaging the chain brake

And raving the saw up and the brake band was sounding awful like something is broke
I've been doing tree work for 25 years and never do that. Options please thanks guys .
 
I guess it's a good idea to test the chain brake at the beginning of the day. You'd want to know if it failed before you need to rely on it in a nasty kickback situation. If the MS 290 is making a terrible noise with the brake on, shut it down and address the source of the terrible noise.
 
I always start my 361 with brake on , but it only sees high idle for a second before I just blip the throttle and kicks down to regular idle. I've never had any problem doing that, it actually says to do it that way in the manual. Brake on/brake off, probably doesn't make a lot of difference if you are doing right. Brake off and drop starting or throw starting, then you could have a dangerous situation.

Take the saw apart and find the damage.
