I know this has been gone over before, but I recently purchased an 038 off of craigslist. The person I bought it from stated that the shop told him it was a magnum. A faded homemade sticker on it states that it is a super. It appears to have a Bing Carb. I know the serial numbers on these saws did not correlate between AV, Super, Mag, and Mag II.

Short of measuring the bore, is there any way to tell which variant I have?

Going by stickers and plastics isn't a sure fire way to identify the saw. You have no way of knowing if they are original or not. Measuring the bore is one of the easiest ways to verify the model. Besides that can you see the part number molded into the cylinder?

50 MM Super P/N 1119 020 1201
