There is a o-ring that goes in there. They show it in the service manual but, I can't find a part number yet.

I found out the part number for the o-ring on the 044's. I contacted Stihl Midwest and here's the response they gave me.

"We received your web inquiry in regard to the o-ring for the worm gear spacer on the 044 chainsaw. The part # is 9645 945 1170 and it will fit on all models of 044/MS440. Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions."

Has anyone replaced this O-ring lately? I just ordered a new O-Ring using the part number mentioned in the post above. The dealer showed me that the book says to substitute this number (9645 945 7506) in it's place. I ordered the O-ring..ok...does anyone have a pic or know exactly how this goes together? It sure doesn't look right to me. The O-ring doesn't fit inside the machined race at the larger bottom of the spacer does it? (Of course I have nothing to compare it to because this is a rebuild and the clutch assembly was all burned up so it was missing.)
See pics I attached for reference.

If you enlarge my pics, you can see there is no way the new O-ring on the right, will fit into that race. You can press the O-ring onto the crank and it fits nicely inside the oil seal by the bearing, but then the spacer just floats on top of that and doesn't even go into the oil seal lips.
The other oring on the left is just one that i bought in a multi-pac from Ace Hardware....which fits into the race, but I don't know if that's a smart thing to do or not. The crank spinning on it may burn it up and toss it into the main bearing it rides against. Can someone PLEASE help! This is holding up my rebuild with this darn O-ring problem!

Regards,
Dave

Your ipl or shop manual shows exactly where the O ring goes in the picts you have posted in # 24 above, the thick O ring you have there is not the correct O ring for a 044 no matter what your dealer says. The spacer cannot seal effectively to the crank until the clutch carrier is threaded into place and torqued to spec.

Don't used sealant unless you have a new bushing. The tolerances from an older bushing against the shaft provides more movement between the two. I tried the sealant trick before. Yes it did hold under pressure and Vac...until it was ran for a tank then I tested again; did not hold vac. I put a new o-ring in there with white grease and it still holds even after...well heck I stopped counting a long time ago!
O-rings are cheap insurance, especially when I will send you one for free!

Don't get how the tolerances could have changed ,that bush doesn't spin once the clutch is tightened,it will only turn with the crank so the only place it can really wear is the seal contact area
