Hi all

I recently picked up a Stihl 07. It’s in reasonable condition, starts easily and runs well.

I’ve given it a good clean and everything seems to work fine, although the starter ring gear is worn and needs replacing. It’s a metal ring gear.

My local Stihl dealer provided me with a replacement ring gear, however, it is plastic.

Will the plastic one work where a metal one was fitted originally? If not, any ideas where I could get a metal one?

How do I get the original ring gear out? I have the flywheel off, but there’s not a lot of room to insert a punch or similar to drive the ring gear out.

I’ve attached a few photos...because what good is a post without photos?

BTW, I’m in Australia.

Thanks

Nice saw.
Just take a scratch awl or a pointed punch, and catch the lip of the ring and drive it towards the center of the flywheel until it becomes loose from folding inward. The plastic ones work good too, they just didn't use plastic or nylon much back then.
It was too light for "real men".
