take hull off acorn?

Yes, it should come off fairly easy if the acorn is ripe. Soak the acorn after removal. If they float, they are not viable.

what color should it be?

what color should ripe bur oak acorns be? I know other acorns are dark, but all the pictures i have seen of bur's have been green. Mine are green and yellow. Are they ripe? Will they ripen?
 
I would determine ripeness by ease of hull removal rather than color. I know they are at times hard to get off of a bur. It should not still be grown together at the top. I have grown many other oaks but only a handful of burs.

It is a numbers game so don't plan on planting 3 or 4. Start more and cull from there.
