Transplanting problems with a Japanese Maple

In January of this year I moved a jap maple that came from a bird drop.
Most of the tree has budded and leafed out, but one vertical branch has not and the bark is beginning to blacken. However, most of the branch is still somewhat pliable. Is it dying off or is this shock?

Sounds like both. A picture would help a lot.
