They have varieties of berries these days that grow well wherever you are, the trick is selecting the best match for your growing environment. Your local County Extension agent will have free info on growing both berries & trees in your area. Before you plant or buy stock I'd advise getting a soil test done to see if it needs help or is sufficent for your plans. The extension agent can get that done to for you at a nominal cost. I'd say the biggest issue with berries in the soil is pH. Growing blueberries in alkaline soil is a waste of energy for example, they need acidic soil. The other issue is water. A ripe berry is probably 90% water and if either Nature or your irrigation system does'nt provide it you'll get gnarly berries if any.
