A wide notch or a narrow one or does it change from tree to tree ? Does one style make a better hinge ? I've always done fairly wide notch thinking that the bigger the notch the better chance of the tree going the way you want it. What's your opinion on it

Hinge help

This thread may help with your question a little.

I used to think size of the notch mattered. Now I am starting to lean toward the hinge being as important. I am just learning to drop large trees and the notches, two different professional timber guys have shown me, are tiny compaired to what I used to do. On a 35" flare, they use about a 70 degree cut down for 12" or so and then horizontal cut to take out the notch. Leave 1" to 2" hinge (more for hollow trees), work your cut around the base, and hammer in wedge(s) as needed.
