Came across these today . About 6 logs about 10-12 feet long . Thinking it's a maple of some sort. But with no branches or leaves hard to tell

Looks just like the silver maple we have around here.

I will add, it splits really nice when green. Not bad when cut in rounds and left for a few months. But I would split ASAP.
The trunk pieces I had would bounce a Fiskars off them when green until I noodled a little into them. The limb wood split beautifully. Can't believe how quickly that stuff dries.

Heh, yea, I tackle them big rounds with my hydro in vertical position. Roll em over, pop em in 1/4's and go from there. Usually it takes a 1-3" of wedge to pop them if not too knotty. Have had some wavy stuff that can be interesting. Still can split it faster than ash on my splitter. Done some stuff about 30" diameter. You get a lot of splits in a hurry. Also, don't be afraid to leave them a little larger splits, I like big rectangles or squares for some odd reason. 6x6 is max usually about right.

I like big splits for the boiler. So big they barely fit in the door. Then about 5 of them will provide overnight heat.
