I am doing something right. 1st time since spring 2013, and it was very clean. I have had to get on the roof at least once a year and knock the soot out of the cap, but other then burning very well seasoned wood, it is amazing that it was so clean. Neighbors was a mess, probably several ft^3 of soot. And I thought it had been swept not to long ago.
Biggest factor was recently removing a metal band that restricted the cap's opening (was there to keep birds from nesting). With the cap's now wide opening the soot doesn't have much chance of building up. Or so my theory goes.
