    Termination Knots

If these climbers didn't tie their primary termination knot correctly, what is to make us think that they could tie the back-up correctly?

    Termination Knots

What this tells me is that knowing your knots and how to dress/set them is the critical thing. Backing up a perfectly secure knot like a buntline hitch or a scaffold (dbl fisherman) with ANOTHER knot is impractical and cumbersome. I always terminate with a buntline on my climb line...

    SIP chainsaw pants

I've had the SIPS 5.1 for a couple months now. They're really comfortable now, but I probably won't wear them this summer because of the heat. My wife says that ladies like the way they look, so that helps.... Oh, and not severing the femoral artery.

    tenex rope nothin better

Yes, tenex does in fact rule. Yalex and walex are good too. I prefer tenex for friction hitches.

    Best Handsaw? Shape? Length? Teeth?

I was (and continue to be) thoroughly unimpressed by the Sugoi. Kanzawa!!!!

    How do you do it

My partner likes to estimate Pin Oak deadwooding (major=3" and up) at $10 per inch of the DBH. It works out right most of the time. Otherwise we estimate time/materials and our hourly rate.

    Best Handsaw? Shape? Length? Teeth?

The 13" Kanzawa Samurai is far better than any Silky saw I've ever used. No contest.

Lightning strike = dead tree every time?

No tree is going to deteriorate that much in 4 months unless it was already flawed.

    Arborist or Tree Service?

My company's name ends as "... Tree Service," but we have definitely goften good calls as a result of our listing under the "Arborist" section of the phone book. Our add also comes "free" with a listing in the tree service section. It is a service industry, right?:greenchainsaw:

    Throwballing removals

In a lot of instances, I will install a climbing line into the tree with the throwline, footlock to the top, and put on my spikes in the canopy. Especially if its large removal where I'll be hanging a block in the top.

    head gear

I don't see how you all can actually climb a tree with muffs and a face mask flopping around on your heads. Talk about dorkish. The flying nun comes to mind. I prefer helmets (like my Ecrin) because they are comfortable. You can barely tell its there. Safety glasses and some ear plugs...

    Lightning Struck Oak

The wound, and the cracks, are facing the house. On the compression side of the lean. If the tree fails it won't hit the house, but will damage the gardens. There are no visable signs of lightning above the already mentioned wound. Zero. These cracks are not that bad right now, and...

    Lightning Struck Oak

Sorry no pics. I left the camera at home on that bid. It would be a good one to have documented. Maybe I'll be going back. The cracks aren't deep. Maybe an inch or so, but they extend up the length of the wound. The main thing that makes me lean towards removal is that the tree is in an...

    Lightning Struck Oak

I looked at a good sized Northern Red Oak today that had been hit by lightning a couple days ago. The forest grown tree is 75-80' tall, about 34" DBH, and sits with a 5º lean towards the house and gardens. The lightning had blown off a patch of bark 2' x 12' and had fractured at least the outer...

    Looking for groundworkers/climber in Louisville

I'm looking for a couple of good helpers for a small tree service in Louisville, KY. Groundwork experience would be a plus. We'll "show you the ropes" if you want to climb a bit. Cory Limbwalker Tree Service 502-634-0400

    Knuckle boom vs Small cranes

I'm not looking to get rid of my chip truck. The truck with the loader will be just for wood hauling. I'm aware that I'd have to get right up next to the pile to load it. I would only chip into this truck if my chip truck was broken down (knock on wood). I'm looking at this as a step up...

    Knuckle boom vs Small cranes

I'm in need of a dedicated wood loader/hauler truck for my tree service. I've got a 95 Ford F-600 with a 5.9L Cummins on my mind right now. 10ft dump bed with twin cylinder hoist and a Hiab 050 knuckle boom. I've never used a knuckle boom before and am curious how they do for tree work. I like...
