So was at the local saw shop, getting a part. And I asked what they did with the saws they didn't fix and didn't want anymore. He said they air mail them into the dumpster out back. I then asked if they would give some of them to me if I wanted. He said no.

What a god dam waste.

That bites! :dizzy:

I should go and ask at the 2 local shops here (Husky & Stihl). If I have time tomorrow I will do that and report back here. Maybe I'll get lucky, maybe I'll be as disappointed as you are.

so check the dumpster every so often. Actually I find customers don't get rid of saws that are not worth fixing like they did even a couple of years back.(they must have friends like you guys)LOL

sounds like an after hours dumpster diving session could be in order...either that or make friends with the garbage pick-up guy.:givebeer:
My uncle works for a local waste mngmt. company...finds little trinkets all the time.

In the US, anything thrown out is fair game. Don't know what it's like in Canada. I'd just be sneaksy and have meself a gander. :)

I don't know about all that. All the dumpsters around here say "private property". And i've heard of tickets given out too.

Far as I know, its still on private property, so #1 it is trespassing, and #2 it is stealing. If its on the public curb, that is different.

I was up at the tree company I worked for this summer fixing some saws and such when one of the guys told me "Buck" cleaned up a lot of the saw stuff that day. I automatically ask where it went. He showed me a bunch of chain and a bent bar, scored a lot of good stuff and then he told me the rest was in the dumpster. So I got outside to have a look, empty. The garbage guy came before I got there. My dealers don't throw anything out that I know of, but I might have to start looking.:dizzy:

We pile our junkers in the attic, and during the winter I tear them down and sell the parts on ebay.

My dealer throws out all sorts of stuff. I have a friend who uses cardboard so I got his permission to go in dumpster to get boxes. Every now and then I find parts but no saws yet. I heard a rumor that some landscaper checks the dumpster every night. Id love to know what hes got out of it.:)

I asked about junk saws at a local stihl dealer that also happens to be a John Deere dealer, and they said they throw away any saws that dont get fixed and they dont take any saws on trade. I asked if I could buy the junk ones and the guy just said "nope I think i'm gonna just keep tossing them." They were not nice peple to deal with. luckily there are 3 other stihl dealers close by, so I dont have to deal with them.

A dealer has a couple of conflicts of interest. If you are scrapping parts off of the saw, or returning a saw to service, that could mean fewer parts or fewer saws for him to sell. Could also be some liability problems, or violate a dealer agreement, if he sold you saws that were defective in some manner.

If you have a good relationship with a dealer, you might set up an arrangement to be his 'scrap metal vendor'. Offer to pay him a scrap price for all of his junk that you will recycle, versus him paying to have them hauled away. Promise to buy any repair parts you need for the saws from him instead of a catalog.

That way, he will have some financial gain to offset lost parts sales, and allow him to keep any dealer agreements he may be committed to.

Just a thought.

That sucks, It would not hurt them to give you the old saws, Their probably afraid you will fix them up and sell them. Thus keeping others from making new saw purchases from them. Or maybe their afraid you can fix them and their tech man couldn't.

The trick is to find a dealer that is far enough away that you don't threaten his customer base. Then, you can pay junk price and he won't worry about lost business. I won't say how far away I drive to get the saws I work on, but it is worth it.

I don`t have to drive to the dealers and repair shops anymore,I find saws sitting on my doorstep/deck or get stopped on the road/highway and there is saws looking for a new home. They all need some work and some need a part or so but I have 12 more saws than I had two months back. There are 7 Jonsereds, 3 Stihl 026`s and 2 Sachs Dolmar 116 SI saws to keep me busy for a couple months.

How would there be any lost parts sales, by giving me saws they would otherwise be throwing in the garbage, I already buy lots from them.
