3.0 ?
Bob

By the time the Craftsman grey saws came out, Sears was more into standardization of parts. 3.0 in the charts Gregg just posted refers to a chromed? bore of 1.750, slightly bigger than a 3.0. Many, if not all, of the red ones were repaired with the 3.7 jug, so if you owned a 3.4 you were supersized for free under warranty or if you brought there for repair. Our friend Eccentric, having worked there, will confirm or deny this. So the only difference in saws could have been bar size in the grey ones, now I wish the catalog graveyard was still available.

Good gosh Mike, I would have pulled the cylinder. Kidding of course. Great idea. How about another one? I terrible when checking squish. Don't think I've ever had the solder compress. I also always do it before installing rings. Not using thick enough solder?
Bob

Well Bob,

It's like I told Nik a while back, "Poulans don't really have squish...it's more like a gentle squeeze"!
I have removed the base gasket in a few Poulans and still just barely crimped the .050 soldier that I use.
I'm actually at a loss to see why these saws run as well as they do after seeing how some others are set up.

Do you daub grease on the 4 sides of your piston and place your little pieces of solder in them?
That seems to work really well.
wigglesworth also told me this last week that he sometimes will twist a length of solder like a twist of tobacco and get a reading that way.

Mike

I had one listed as a 3.0 as well. That didn't make sense since Poulan didn't offer a "3000" on that chasis. Someone should measure the bore. Maybe it was a marketing thing and it reall was a 3.4. Also the red/black saws were marked 3.4/16" or 3.7/18". The grey black saws only have the sears number and a 16"-18" bar. Now that isn't as reliable since the bar could have been replaced several times!

Joe if you look up that saws part # that was posted as a 3.0 on the Sears website the part #'s for the P/C directly cross to Poulan 3400 parts. That tells me that saw is indeed a 3400 and was probably badged as a 3.0 to meet a special price point for Sears for a special promotion.

Much cheaper to just make up a new 3.0 decal then to tool up a new P/C.

The red 3700, the red 3800 and the black and grey 3800's all were available with 20" bars as well. I have some documents supporting this and shows a different part # for the saws depending on what size bar they came with.

Noticed and fixed it. Thanks. I see you responded in the Jonsered stickie. Looking a a couple 49SP. Missed one . Outbid in last minute. One now is at $90 and don't really know value.
Bob

Varies depending upon condition. Run of the mill, thats not bad. Very good, thats a steal.

Back to Poulans.

Take your time and make sure you get a good one to begin with, even if you have to give a little bit more for one up front it will be cheaper in the long run.

I dont know why I keep mine, I bet it aint been started in 2 years. :hmm3grin2orange:

here are 2 generators like ours on Craigslist

Hi guys,

Thought I would pass this along.... found these 2 generators. They are like the 2 we have on the farm. The little one
especially, gets used often. Our 7.5 HP one has a cradle with side guards that it sits in.

I was thinking of ohio gregg for this one.... I don't know what this guy is thinking, they aren't loud at all. They just arent
as quiet as a honda suitcase generator. He probably setup camp next to a guy that had one, now he wants one....

Poulan 2150watt 5hp Briggs and Stratton Generator

This one is in Michigan, it is 7.5hp, but without the side guards.....

3000 Watt Poulan generator

KJC:)

5200 or 8500 junk cyl; ....& pic size?

Anybody have one? ceased up, scored up ok.

also, going to take a few pics soon with my new christmas present from wife. I should probably try to use the smallest pixel size
I'm guessing. Going to take a picture of our dealer sign hanging in my shop, I think you'll like it.

LOL, Believe it or not. I saw that on Craigslist just the other day. I seldom look on there. Usually just wildthings & such for big money. I saw the Briggs powered Poulan generator. Had serious thoughts of checking it out, but passed.

Gregg,

I love the Worlds Greatest Chainsaw sign! :love1:

Gregg,

Love the sign, and really digging the shop!

As a side note, my 4000 arrived Wednesday, and I'm out of town so I'm not able to see it yet. I need a 24-28" bar for it now, and if anybody has a good Poulan bar they might be interested in selling, let me know!

3400 screw problem

My 3400 was missing the top rear screw on the recoil so i found one and then discovered it must be stripped. It wouldn't tighten up. Tried a little Loctite to see if it would hold---didn't. Remove recoil and learned someone had drilled out the screw hole and run the fuel line through it. Strange! Anyway I thought I'd just rethread the hole and go to the next bolt size. Question is how to get a tap in the tight space without a tear down. Any ideas? Better plan? Thanks.

I would use a heli-coil personally. That way a future owner doesn't look at the oversize bolt and drilled out hole in the cover and think, "WTF".

Gonna need some pictures of that previous mod. That just doesn't sound correct and wonder how they routed everything. I mean, it is just goofy.

Truly is just goofy. They just drilled out the hole and routed the gas
line through it. Why I don't know. I'm a little pix challenged.
