the clutch cover is like older saws its the same ,just the outer dogs different ,yes ive put 440 dog on a 460 ,just the roller catcher was different ,a file in the hole and works fine ,cant do that on the 461 ,the front cases are a little longer ,i took some better pics last night ,and a couple of the 460 and 461 side by side i will post in a little bit ,it looks like maybe 9 parts may be the same ,rest of saw is all new ,think who you were talking too had his shoes on backwords that day

Maybe it was just me gawking at the saw and not paying attention to what the rep was saying, lol. Then again, 9 parts is almost the entire saw...

I think it's the same, too. I have a 046 muffler that I haven't had a chance to put on the new 461 yet. Can't wait to bolt it on and fire it up. The guys in Sedro Woolley told me that the fallers there testing the 461 were putting 460 coils in them. As I just muffler mod (or in the case of the 460/461, just get a 046 muffler), I can't speak to the reasons for it. We'll see how mine goes pretty stock.

I like that shop in Woolley :msp_biggrin:

The tank would be interchangable I assume, the case design should be the same,Filter, flywheel?, handle bars, crank?, pin, clutch, drum, bearings...

tanks different ,look at the pics i posted ,the handlebar angle tips more forward on the 461 ,look at the handlebar closely on the wrap side its wider than the 460 ,case is different look under the muffler ,plus theres that goofy air deflector inside the intake side under the jug ,air filters the same ,ill have to pop the starter covers off see if flywheels the same ,,ill look at the clutch also ,i would think that be the same ,but it may be upgraded by now,im curious if it used a 460/660 type oil pump also

Stop it!!!! Your tempting me to go and buy one. I really like the looks of them. The demo I ran a couple years back have pretty decent power for being stock.

tonight ill take some pics of the bottoms for comparison, and pop the clutch apart ,and check the flywheels ,it looks like if include the handlebar ,the fuel tank may fit ,the black plastic part under the air filter may have to be included to put the 461 tank on a 460

if you like the way they look ..............you will like the way they run better ,this thing has a lot more noticeble tourqe than my 460 ............well randy kinda did something inside to this one too

Thats what I heard. I cut logs with a 461 demo in the winter of 2010 for a few days, despite it being in stock form other than a ported faceplate I did like the power. Don't go taking your saw apart on my account bud, I'll take your word for it. :msp_biggrin:

whats wrong with the 461 muffler ? this one flows pretty good

Looks like you opened up the backside of the muffler, and slapped on a dual port front half - looks pretty clean. The whole 046 muffler is only about $30 more than just the dual port front half. I am too lazy to open up the stock back half opening, and prefer to keep it bone stock with OEM parts for warranty and liability purposes.:cool2:

Who's this Randy guy :jester:

tank is the same. stihl just came out with the new style with the stihl raised logo on the tank.

crank is the same. clutch also. oil pump too. handle again yes.

basically p&c, plastics, recoil, crankcases, limited coil, are the main differences between the 461 and 460.

Is the av buffers the same as the 460? I really like the looks and the power the 461 is making and have a good stihl dealer nearby.:msp_confused:
