I've got a nice MS440 hybrid, but have wanted to build an early 044. I'm starting with an early 10mm saw that I picked up off Ebay. I will be fitting a 12mm crank into this saw, and installing it with new crank bearings. The angled fin cylinder has a lot of the NiSi worn through. Fortunately, I have another nice one that I will be using. I've not yet decided if I will be using a Meteor 12mm 044 piston or a thin-ring Husky piston. It depends on the piston height difference, once I get to that point.

I've noticed that 044s have used different tanks, filler caps, air filter covers, model plates, etc. I'd love to see you guys minty 044s:rock:

Here's what I'm starting with. The saw is all apart and cleaned up now.

What are you after with this build? a new old 044? I understand the 10mm saw had better numbers, does anyone know specifically what numbers? were there any other performance enhancements?

looking forward to seeing the end product.

Basically, I want a copy of an early 10mm saw, but with 12mm durability. I'd love to have a set of NOS cases to start with. This started with a nice 10mm cylinder, and went from there. CAD has definitely taken over, lol.
 
Join the crowd...I'm always looking for 044/046 tanks. It's a never-ending battle.

yep, I found out how difficult that was to find an 044 tank. The dealer price is well...:dizzy:
And nearly impossible to find a nice, clean used 044 tank.
 
i don't know why or what it is ,but my old 044 sounds angrier than a 440 ,the lighter rod doesn't seem to be an issue in mine ,it was a saw my step dad logged with a couple years before the skidder ran it over ,and cad took over for me too ,i replaced about everything on it making it pretty ,the lighter rod may help some throttle response some
 
I got one I bought new in the late 80's, she isn't mint but it was my only firewood saw until,( I found this place ) If you just want some cover pics and stuff of a early variant , I'll post them but i'm just starting a plastic sanding / restoration to bring her back to her former glory . Termite
 
Thanks for making me want a minty 10mm saw even more. Next one that comes in the shop will be coming home.
 
Hardly minty, but I just like this pic with the way the sun and shadows were setting it off when I first brought it home a few years ago. Best $265 I ever spent! (Added a couple more pics of the day I brought it home since they were handy...)

I love this saw. (And yeah, I got rid of the stickers.)

hey brad, any chance you post a pic of the 10mm cylinder next to a 12mm cylinder, got a customer that dropped off what looks to be an earlier model 044, but i cant tell if it's 10 or 12mm, he most likely wont be fixing it and it may become mine, would be cool if it is a 10mm, but again, i need to see what the two look like side by side, thanks

if you look at the fins on top, most of the time the 10mm jugs are angled cooling fins and 12mm are strait across
 
i think Jacobj will know this or maybe pionierguy ,not many but a few may have come out the first year angled 12mm but don't quote me on this ,iv'e seen aftermarket with angled fins also with 12mm pistons

Here is my 044 metal tag 12mm. It is a very clean saw, I found it in a auction box completely took apart. Wiggs gave me the piston I cleaned the jug and Here it is. :rock: Man I like a 044. :rock:
