Just picked up a new 22ton and on the first log the auto return didn't work it sticks and stalls the motor out. This thing wont even split large cherry let alone medium elm. I have had 3 about 4 years ago when I was big into firewood and the only problems I had were lines coming off. The old ones split everything I threw at them. I have owned a few different splitters and I swear my old old 22 ton ran the best and split the best (2004 model?). Are these things junk anymore?

You must have a bad one . Mine is brand new and splits most rounds at idle engine speed on knots and twists sometimes I had to turn up the throttle to crack it open .maybe you could call tsc and swap it out for another one or something .i have only ran mine for an hour though and have nothing to compare it too but all seems well split whatever I put up against it . I split half a cord of big cherry rounds

You really should run at full throttle or expect short life from the equiptment.

I'm not doubting this but out of curiosity What is the mechanical reasoning behind the idea of having to run it at full throttle for longevity instead of a lesser rpm if the load doesn't require it. Something to do with the hydrolic pressure. ?

Your engine hp rating is at full throttle. Your pump is picked to match that hp. Your putting a lot of extra stress on the engine by running it at a lower rpm.

Not to mention, your pump is rated at a certain gpm at a certain rpm. So your splitter is going to take a heck of a lot longer.

I wouldn't call the splitter junk just because it has a bad valve. If it's brand new and under waranty take it back for repair.

What Joesell said!

Basically for the same reason that it is a lot easier to speed up when approaching a hill than remain a constant speed and be lugging your engine at the top.
The greater the momentum the less pressure on bearings, crankshafts, piston rings, lovejoy couplers, and the pump itself.

Most of the cheaper engines rely on splash lubrication in the form of a dipper and need a certain rpm for the fan to cool the engine properly. Much more to this, but covers the engine in question.

That splitter is set up to run at full throttle. If its a recent buy, take it back to TSC they will swap you out with a receipt. Otherwise, have them contact their Speeco rep for warranty work/parts replacement. Sounds like you got a bad valve.

Well after I put a little over 30 face cord thru it it still wont split thru the big stuff unless I just chip off an edge. In cold weather I have to have it start about 5 times before it will run ( about 50 pulls) and I let it warm up before I even touch the lever. Today it wouldn't start at all. I had to use a 1/4 can of supertec lubricant to get it started and keep spraying/pulling to get it to actually run longer than 5 seconds. I plan on taking it back but cant afford to at the moment as I have been selling a lot of wood. I did however get the 3 year warranty. They were running a special 18mo 0% so I did that I paid 1250 for the splitter another ball pin and pair of gloves.
