Hows everyone feel about a 372 pulling a 32" bar?

What if the 372 had a BB kit and a muffler mod....any better?

372

It will pull it, but it will be MAXED OUT stock, it will do better modded. If you run it unmodded well, I hope you're not power hungry, or a speed freak lol, like me.lol:clap::greenchainsaw: :hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2:

I have two 372's and a 440 all power tuned by Madsens that wear 32" bars. That's the norm around here and they pull well in softwood. Hardwood is probably another story however I think that it would still do the job just slower.

I use a 32 with full comp semi-chisel occasionally in oak and it does o.k. You have to take it slow, and a muffler mod will help. Make sure the saw is broken in first, as mine really took off after about 10 tanks of gas. 32" is the max for this saw. You'd be better with a 395 or 066 if you're into this size wood regularly. If you're like me and it's something you do every once in a while, it can work. I would think it would be fine in soft woods and I understand the Northwest guys use this length all the time.

You can expect performance like this in really tough hardwoods with 3/8" full skip semi-chisel:

So I hear. I'd like to give it a try, but I hear it's really difficult to hand file and the grinders for square are really expensive. I also hear square dulls quickly in hardwoods and is used mostly in NW softwoods.

Maybe I'll buy a loop and run some trials in the future vs different round ground.

It seems like no matter what 32" is a bit much for this saw. Its for a guy who works for us and doesnt want a 395.

I will tell him a 28" with a muffler mod is all he'll get out of a 372.

Now to the next question........BB or stock with the muffler mod?

I'd do it very occasioanlly just to get by, but if you really like your 372, I wouldn't beat it up that way. If you're really cutting wood that requires a 32in bar, you need 85ccs or more.

I agree with Andre, but for context, cutting the red oak in the video wasn't much easier with a 24" full comp chain. This was really tough wood. I tried to manually split some afterwards and was unable to get a wedge or axe into it. My axe would just bounce off of this stuff and the wedges wouldn't take hold, just made little indentions in the surface! I had to let it dry for 4 months to develop fletches before I could manually split it.

What I didn't show was ripping the tree vertically for about 4 feet (it had a double base 48" x 39"). The video is too painful to share as I didn't have ripping chain, so 3/8" full comp semi-chisel had to do. Ouch! Slow!

The good news is that 30 minutes and 2 chain changes later the tree was on the ground! I can't imagine running into wood much tougher than this, so you can get by with the 32" when you have to.

I have a 372 and use it quite often with a 30" bar and chisel chain does the job doesnt bog down, but still am going to do a muffler mod to try to speed it up alittle but just havent got to it yet

Most of my modded 372XP's are sent out with 34" 75ga. I have a few fallers running 37" 404. These saws are quite expensive but they will out-pull a stock MS660 all day long.
