I would have to say that most of the readers of AS are happy to at least try to fix it themselves. However, AS has also taught me to at least ask the local guy for the parts rather than pay for the shipping...

Yes that is one advantage I did forget to mention. Another is simply to ask the dealers advice on which way to go in a repair of situation. Honestly the only dealer repair I have had down to a saw is to put in a helicoil in the case where the bar studs thread in that got stripped out, completely my fault I might add. Having someone with knowledgeable advice close by is nice, but not necessary. With the advent of the Internet, forums such as this, repairs and tips are passed on all the time. Not all people need or want to got to a dealer of any brand, saving a few clams is more important, unless you are running a business and do not have the time to do it yourself, or the clams to hire a repair/maint. type dude.

Who's cheeleading for Pull on???

They are a good homeowner saw if taken care of...not a pro saw..not even close. Not even the ones marketed as "pro" saws. You want catch me calling a Poulan a professional grade saw, no sir.

We sell them in Home Depot right alongside the Echos, for about the same price. :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

It is pretty easy to see why STIHL is the best selling saw on the market.

1. They are the only brand that has sizes to fit every need and pocketbook.

2. They are not sold in box stores but usually have a dealer within a 20 mile radius.

3. Their dealers are usually also service centers. (this really helps schmucks like me.)

4. They advertise.

5. They have spent many years and $$$$$ to develop a great product and a great reputation.

6. They produce a quality product instead of producing a cheap product.

I have owned Homelites and liked them too but they in no way compared to the quality of my STIHLS. I would like to try Huskies and Dolmars but there are no dealers in my area except TSC (small huskies) and we all know what their service dept. is like.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that if Husky or Dolmar want the recognition that STIHL gets than they too will have to pay their dues.

When they have saws that are still runnung after 25 yrs then they too will have something to brag about.

just my 2 cents

Huck

Gee whiz, another Stihl's best.....no Husky's best......well maybe Dolmar's best thread.
Come on guy's. Just grab your brand of choice and go kill some trees. It'll make you feel better, I promise.

We run Stihls for Performance

I do wonder though, a lot of people state that dealer support is paramount in buying a saw. How many people actually take their saws in and have the shop work on them for a astronomical price, versus buying the part and working on the saw themselves. Where and how the part comes from is not important, they all come from a delivery truck, just getting the part is, like chains, and bars or what have you.

Right on the money. Almost all loggers around here run Stihl's, but only a few of them get their parts from the Stihl dealers anymore. The part prices are crazy now. We are starting to use aftermarket stuff now, just have a hard time justifying what the dealer is telling us anymore. Even the dealers look a little worried.

Stihl is just the best and Ol Dad ran em from the time they hit the American market big time. I would like to try a Solo but will always swear by Stihl. Stihl 4 life.

It would seem that the Saw dealers are looking like car dealers anymore, you have to sign over your kid as collateral to get anything done. Like $30.00 for a tire rotation, or some bologna. I get everything I need from the net for both brands I have, and after 2 years of doing this I have not been burned once, and I know I have saved a bunch of money that way.

Auto, where have you been??? Please read JD Power and Consumer Report and read all the other web sites. Our good old american car kick their behind. Even the Korean start kicking their behind. Only brand that is worse than Mercedes is Land Rover.

And German don't know safety either. The BMW 5 series FAIL!!! Mercedes E class side impact just marginal. They are just like us in the 70s, going down the crapper. Audi is the only one that at least is OK. It is all perception, not reality. Just hope Stihl being build in USA is better.

Nothing stay the same, have to keep up with it or you can waist a lot of money. Also see my experience in my last post.

hahahahahahahah
funny stuff.........do you know what SRS stands for with regards to airbags???????????

SECONDRY RESTRAINT SYSTEM...... SECONDRY!

the firts is a seat belt.... but thats against your freedom...
so cars sold in america have to have more powerfull airbags cause people dont wear seat belts.... more deaths occure to children from airbags in america than any other country....

but europen cars are designed different. to what the american standard...
my advice...wear a selt belt

oh yes landrover are ####, i know this cause im stupid enough to own one.

my answer would be they build a great saw and marketing is the best in the business...backed up by dealer support. they have stuck to there guns.

husky should learn from this!

and im a husky guy.

On Honda it means 'Supplemental Restraint System'.

They all cut wood and thats all that matters thier all good except for the walmart/craftsman deals. my local dealer give me all Stihl saws 10%-15% above cost because we buy so many saws 5-10 saws a year we get a 200t for 485$ out the door. the last 441 i bought brand new was something like 650 or something close it was a few months ago. if you buy enough saws thiers alot of dealerships around here that want our buisness. local dealership told me they have to sell something like 70,000$ worth of saws a year to be able to sell. i cant be sure thats true or not but im sure thiers some type of minimum.

ya know, there is a flaw in the "rep" system.

I hate it when random people come into a thread, dont like your opinion and NEG REP you because they dont agree with you. But they dont post in the thread so you can neg rep them back. That's pretty bogus. Little newbie dude know it all negged me "the more I read your posts, the less I like you" but he wasnt man enough to post in this thread...

Amazing.

You should only be able to give rep, good OR bad, once you have posted in that thread.

ALSO, Im going to find saps old avatar..the "say no to team stihl" one...brb

It would have been very easy to find his posts elsewhere trough his "profile". If you didn't take the trouble - that is your problem, not a fault of the system......:censored:

Negging back isn't something you should automatically do btw, but with that comment I would probably have done it.

PS;
For some reason you have copied the avatar of the most infamous member that ever was on the AS - that may tell us something......:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2:

Just another pretender

That is just in the mind of the Stihl fanatics and the uninformed - it is far from the truth!

...not that it matters, anyway! :greenchainsaw:

Correctly said, Mr Sawtroll !!
Stihl certainly did not invent the chainsaw, as several other manufacterers were already involved in the production of electrical and gas fired machines in the late twenties, when Stihl developed its first saw. In a german book called 'the history of the chainsaw', there is word of several official "GTG" that were organised by the government to evaluate the performance of early chainsaws, with several manufacterers involved (Rinco, etc).

that does not infringe however in any way the solid reputation and the quality of the Stihl brand we know today (imo).

I don't recall ever having read a claim by Stihl that they invented the chainsaw. Surely, this is nothing more than an attempt by an over zealous customer to apply credit where credit is not due. That, being said...I like the product that they produce, they make a good, dependable saw, and that's why I buy them.

A big thanks to sap for the nifty avatar, It was a tough choice between the dude taking a wiz on "stihl" but that one is in use by an active member, and thats not how I roll.

Awwwwwwwww now Red. Ya know I rarely ever bother you but if your gonna take joy in that new avatar then I'm gonna take joy in kicking your behind all over this site. I hate to have to whop ya bad but it seems now your itching for a whipping. Spare yourself the agony of defeat, get rid of that dayumm thing while ya able,LOL
