What do you guys think of spark arrestor screens?
Are you installing them?
I had Walkers Mod my 357Xp's muffler, and they sent it back with no screens in it! :( Is it a real fire risk?

I spent the morning at the Stihl dealership, pining over a new 460 (CAD anyone?) The guy there told me that the muffler off a 660 bolts on to the 460. But the 660 muffler flows better due to the larger engine that is supposed to go behind it. Has anyone else heard of this? Would it be an alternative to cutting out the baffles? Albeit a $50 alternative...

Ale,

Great pictures and directions. Thanks. Being a new member (victim?) of CAD, I really appreciate the details.

My 385 is in dyer need of some muffler help and I was just wondering if I could open it up some internally as well as externally. I have opened up the muffler on my 192T successfully and was just hoping to do the same with the 385.. I am open to any suggestions.
Jared

The 385 muffler is just a hollow can. Nothing inside of it to remove, but it benifits well from additional ports.

That is not correct. The 660 muffler is a totally differant and larger muffler that will not fit the 460 case.

The only thing I can imagine he was talking about was the 460 dual port cover, sometimes called "power caps" that is available for them. It does not come on the new saws, but it is a replacement part. It came on the old 046 magnums before EPA and Osha made them quiet them down. This cover also fits the 440/044. This is the same cover that the original poster shows pics of.

Any ideas as to where I should place these additional ports and how i should make it so they can be screened off as that is what the forest service requires.

Here are a couple pics.

The easiest way is by far to go through the bottom bracket and install a spark screen between the muffler and bracket. (last picture) This works great for a power increase, but it can make the bark a little smokey on the long cuts.

Another thing you can do is use muffler outlet scoop from a husky 281/288 part number 503 0783-01 and the screen 503 4056 -01 screen. This can be bolted anywhere on the side or top for clearance purposes. The scoop and screen will set you back about 15 bucks for the pair and you will need two screws to attach them. I don't have any pics handy, but there are many on here if you search muffler mod pics.

Rear Screen

Thought some would like to see how to go about removing the baffle of a MS460 muffler. There are easier ways i'm sure, like with a mill, but you can still get by with simple tools.

stock muffler on left.dual port cover on right
attachment.php

first drill out the spot welds that hold the inner baffle to the outer shell...don't go too deep. take your time and work your way up from small to larger bits until you break through the first layer of metal. You should be able to drill out 6 spots total.
attachment.php

next use a grinder at the top where it is hard to get the correct angle with a drill. I used a dremel tool to take the metal down to the next layer. again be careful and take your time so you don't remove too much material.
attachment.php

now that the welds are weak...flip the muffler over and use a punch and a hammer to drive the baffle out...make sure the welds have been drilled out enough so it starts to come out. use some pliers to wiggle the baffle around until it breaks free. CAREFUL don't pry to hard, if the spot welds aren't totally drilled out you can tear a hole through the outer layer when you pry or twist.
attachment.php

now you have the guts removed...next you still need to remove the screens and enlarge the rear hole to you desire. bolt on the dual port cover, adjust your carb settings and enjoy.

How do you remove the screens to get at the rear hole, just bend those tabs up and slide the screen out?

Thx. Roy

Whats the rule of thumb for the rear hole. I just gutted my 660 muffler a couple weeks ago and really like it(it already had the dp cover), but am curious as to how much to cut out of the rear hole.

Thanks stang. How well does the one in the side work as far as power. I really love the pics should give me lots of good ideas on what to do. Thanks again I can always count on my AS buddies for good advice. Now if only I can figure out the porting thing.
