Just picked up a 394 locally with a 36" .404 bar and chain. My search on here didn't get me the info I needed.

I'd like to buy a 28" bar to use with this, but most bars seem to be 3/8" so I guess I'll need a new sprocket.
Should I get 3/8x7 or x8 tooth sprocket?

The saw is a factory 394 (no mods) running a 28" bar cutting 20-30" hardwood.

Thanks in advance. This site has been a wealth of information.

Get one of each and see which you like best. My guess would be that you'll prefer the 8 pin, but you should decide for yourself.

Depends on how you operate a saw and fix a chain.
7pin for most, especially if you are falling them.
