Both fine saws. Dollar for dollar, I would probably give the nod to the 7900. Same price, probably lean toward the Stihl...

coil swap

On the coil swap for the 7900 here is what i have.

I,m sure the list can be added to..what i have so far.
same types grouped together.

Skilsaw 1632, Type 1,
Mcculloch Promac 1000 .
Husqvarna: 50, 51, 55, 254, 154, 257, 261, 262, 40, 45, 49, 268, 272 Jonsered: 490, 590, 2050, 2045, 2041, 2051, 2054, 2055, 670 Partner:S50,S55, 500, 5000, 540, Older 55cc 65cc 85cc...
( dont know about the S65 but looks like a bolt on )

Poulan Pro 475 and would work on the 415, 445 and 505 as well as the Jonsered clones. Also the original Partners of that series. (MM)

A husky 55 coil is what some have used on 7900/681s also (mdavlee)

Generally speaking.....625,630 and 670 Jonsered and the husky 61,162,266,268 and 272 will fit. But again there are two types of igns. ( cantdog)

mweba discovered a 55 would fit a 3120, with a little modification for the change in flywheel radius.

husky ( 36,136,137,41,141,142 ) all same coil.

husky ( 334, 335, 336, 338, 339, 340, 345, 346, 350, 351, 353, 357, 359, 362, 365, 371, 372, 385, 390, 570, 575 Jonsered 2145, 2149, 2150, 2159, 2163, 2165, 2171 ) same.

This list is not from my experiances.info from members and internet.

Out of interest who here that says this saw is better than that saw has actually used both? (and I don't mean just "holding" both!).
An honest question but too many people on AS will say this saw is better than that saw but are either brand biased or own one of the particular models in question.
Personally I love the 7900's but price got me over the line there. It could just have easily been a 460 or 372 as they were both on my list. I like all saw brands!
I haven't used a 460 but would love to have a go on one. My new modded 660 is growing on me for sure :)

I owned a 460 for 4 years. A stock 7900 had more power than the modded 460 I had when I got the first 7900. The second 460 was almost equal to one 7900. I don't like the 460 at all really. The 044/440 is a much better saw in the stihl lineup. Really the only stihl I like is the 660. The 200T is probably a great saw but I've never ran one. I like 372/2171 better in the 70cc class.

Welcome post mate. I've never run any Stihl pro saws (from memory!) other than an 066, my 660s, an 880, and my 200T.
The 200T alongside the modified 79cc Makita 6401 I owned (I kept the top end) are the most impressive saws I've ever run.
The stock 7900's certainly impressed me but I had never really run any other similar saws to compare them with at the time. I've since run Al's self modded BB 371 and that impressed me. He builds tough saws for sure. It was right on the hammer of the Makita, if not equal and without a pop up or 200psi :)

460, 7900...I would buy a 460 every time, but I will take my old 064 over both.

But what really gets me going in the Video is the 026 :)

hey tw,
thanks for the vid.

i have always wondered how a 460 and a 7900 would compare stock.
i am curious... were both saws running the same sprocket? 7 or 8 tooth?
also,
i like that they are all running the same stihl bar!

looking forward to the progression of this thread!

edit:
btw, i ran my personal 7900 run against a good 066 in 18-20" red oak at a gtg and they were dead even.
would you say it was because of the size of the wood, and that the 066 would maybe start to pull ahead in larger wood?

edit2:
here's a vid i took of my 7900 in roughly 14" x 14" frozen white oak running an 8 tooth. :)

I would say that saw would be faster with a 7 pin, it's really dropping rpm in the cut IMO. I'm not saying it don't run good, just that it seems it would be faster with a 7.

I dont give opinion unless I have owend both saws at the same time, and substacial time on both. I have only Husky and Stihl but it seems the others r makeing great products. Alot of my conclusion is feel and down time not 1 or 2 seconds. I dont feel I could give a good overall opinion by just running a few hours. I have never seen a 7900 but I have 046 and 372 xpw and can choose between them almost every day, and for me I choose the 372 I just like it better, you could put some white paint on it and I would still like it better. I have never cut cokies with these saws so I dont know how they would stack up, but I know how they stack up for me in the woods. With that said if you handed me a 46 to use for the day or week I would be more than fine with it because it is a great saw. Not to many POS saws in that catagory from what I have seen on here.

You r write about the 064 I had 3 of them I dont no weight or power compaired to the other but mine were very reliable saws and plenty of power.

I have 2 of each of those saws i would say the 460 has about the same speed in small wood but as the wood gets bigger the 7900 has more torque. My experiance has been as the wood gets bigger and harder theres no replacement for displacement. Both saws have been good saws for me to use in my business as a timber cutter.Ihave atleast one of every pro saw over 4.5 ci from dolmar husky and stihl except a 9010 3120 and 8800 and i seem to use the 7900 and 460 more than the others.

maybe.

watch the first cut again and you will see me shift my feet and lean on the saw so hard that the log slides toward me.
in the second cut i shift my feet and lean in again.

i was leaning on the saw very hard, intentionally.

Just to get back to 'build' issue. I predict that Brian will get more improvement out of the 7900 than the 460. The 7900 is based on the 6400 and the transfer ports are rather restricted due to the 'big bore' effect of reduced transfer area in order to get a bigger piston diameter. After seeing what kind of transfer work he has done to other saws, I'm looking forward to what he comes up with on the 7900.

my 460 impresses me every time i use it.today i dropped and blocked a 16"hickory using the 20"
bar with a square chisel chain and the 7pin rim.
In smaller wood up too about 14"-16" the 8 pin really shines. Its not that it won't pull the 8 pin in 20" wood it just holds the rpms better with the 7.
Sure wood like to have a 7900 tho,if they run like my 5100 with 30 more cc's they would have too be impressive.

Both Great Saws

As far as stock saws go, the 7900 has noticeably more grunt than the 460 in bigger wood, with maybe a 28" or 32" bar. I added a 046 muffler and dual port front on my 460, and it helped it along, but still did not equal the 7900 imo. To me, the stock 460 is about neck and neck with a 372XPW.

All of these saws are winners. On a related topic, one thing that troubles me is the huge price increases that Dolmar has been pushing out recently. These seem way out of line with the USD to Euro exchange rate. I bought a 7900 about 3 years ago, and decided to pick up another before they go away. The best price I have found in WA is around $780 PHO, with multiple dealers here telling me that the price will go up to $825 shortly. Yikes. I paid around $650 for my last one. That is more than a 460 Wrap here.

They wanted $520 for a new 5100 too.

What is up with Dolmar pricing? It seems that they are more expensive than either Husky or Stihl, and have a poor dealer network to boot.
