A couple hours ago, I was reading the post about Pics of the types of work boots other guys wear, and a few days ago there was the post about cutting wood wearing sneakers and shorts. Well, out of the blue, 10 minutes ago, my brothers girlfriend who I've not met yet called me to tell me my brother is in surgery to fix his big toe that he cut up with his Husky. She was crying and all choked up and emotional. I told her don't worry about it, they'll clean it out, stitch the tendon back together, put a pin through the bone to stabilize it and close him. They should be done in an hour, hour and a half tops. Don't know what kind of foot gear he was wearing, but evidently it wasn't enough. Oh, and just yesterday he was going on and on in an e-mail about how he loved those Carlton chains he was running. Must be the super sharp bone cuttin' chain!

Man, I cut for years as a kid in cowboy boots. Just bought a new saw today but have been reading about some ppe here for a couple of weeks. I had my wife find me some st boots a couple of days ago and I'm seriously thinking of chaps before I even cut. I was a guitar player for 20 years so I stayed way away from these after working 5 winters with my dad and making decent money for a kid. I'm old now and still need my toes and legs and fingers. I appreciate all the info I've gotten here. I never even heard of kevlar chaps before 3 weeks ago.

I sure hope this guy comes out ok.

I haven't heard from my bro this morning, but he made it out of surgery just fine last night. He's a big puddin'. They wanted to put in a spinal block, but he's real squeamish, so they put him completely asleep instead. I will find out what kind of boots/shoes he was wearing. He usually wears his helmet/faceshield/hearing protection combo, but I don't know if he wears chaps. Will keep you all posted.

I hope he comes out OK, man. It sucks what happened to your brother - but thanks for sharing it with us here. You see too many people out cutting without any kind of PPE, it's scary. We all need to be reminded that a saw can really mess you up. I was thinking of ordering a new pair of boots for Christmas - I think I'll go for steel toes now. Good luck to you and your brother.

Sorry to hear about your brother, hope he recovers completely. Thanks for sharing and reminding us all to wear our PPE even if its just for a quick setup and cut.I had a chainsaw bounce last week and slice the left toe of my Vikings, no damage to me but the boot has a few scars. Saw safe.

I put a small notch in a boot sole, that stuck out a little past the toe. Those were steel toes, but it didnt get that far. The biggest eye opener is a Carhardt hat that has a nick in the brim... I still have it, for a reminder.

It pays to wear a helmet, even when there's nothing to fall on you.

Even if you wear steel toed shoes the saw can stiil get you. I wear them all the time whether it be tennis shoes or work shoes that steel toe gives peace of mind. Hope he has a full quick recovery.

You must have big feet. Just kiddin, My grandfather did that when I was a lillte kid. I was amazed that it didnt hurt him. Made me think he was superman. Hope OR nusres brother is OK.

Grandpa was probably just too embarrassed to let you know how much it hurt<a href="http://www.sweetim.com/s.asp?im=gen&lpver=3&ref=11" target="_blank"><img src="http://content.sweetim.com/sim/cpie/emoticons/00020468.gif" border="0" title="Click to get more." ></a>

Hope the bro gets a full toe covery friend:cheers:

I hope your brother is ok and gets to keep all his toes.

Me personally i do not like steel toes. I have to wear them every day at work and have seen nothing good with them. One guy Dropped a keg on his foot from 3 kegs high and it blew the steel out the front of the boot and took his big toe off...wasn't pretty

Any protection is just a barrier, In hope that you will realize what's going on and stop.

For me they come in real handy when a 700 lb. sow plants her foot on my toes.
