Yup, there's definitely use for back baring.

Like say, if you're cutting on a slope -- and the tree is leaning down hill (let's pretend we want to throw it down hill) -- & you're standing on the right hand side facing down. It's easier to dog in and pull down on the saw and cut out the undercut, rather than flipping the saw and blowing chips in your face.

But, if you we're throwing in an overhand face (traditional), you'd use the bottom of the bar.

I like having a bunch of tools in my tool box, conventional and unconventional.
 
There are exceptions to what you've said regarding back barring. It can be used effectively under certain circumstances and as with all things the more you do it the better you become at it. I use it a lot falling windbreak trees at 2-3 metre spacings.
certainly Matt, but i figure we are giving advice to guys here that are.......i'll say green........i actually do it often on smaller pine........they say a guy in arkysaw does it alot lol.
