That sometimes works well too but depending on the plant the chain can slip off
The brush grubber has sharp teeth that bite into the trunk so it doesn't slip off
The harder you pull the more they bite in

As mentioned, I suspect the chain is on backwards, for sure.

My thought as well.

I've seen YouTube videos of people using a farm jack and chains. They wrapped the chain around the entire bundle of shrubs and started cranking. It just takes a while to pull the shrub/small tree out of the ground due to the farm jack only moving about a half inch or so at a time. This method would save your yard.
