As far as I know, the 298's were only XP's and only made for a couple of years (1986-87).
These had the silver tag and that tag (to the best of my knowledge) did not carry the XP moniker- the top of the air box would have XP (as yours does) and the original plastic recoil cover (another weight saver) would have the small square blue on silver 298XP decal.
As stated above- the lightened starting system and no decomp used to lead to starter failure on these and a lot were swapped out for magnesium cover 2100 starters- mostly from CD models so the recoil XP decal was lost in the process.
