Howdy folks i have one question to the chainsaw wizards here on this site
Ok if you could have only onE Big ole Vintage muscle saw would you choose and why?
Im talking the bigger cc vintage saws ok
i dont know the numbers off by heart yet or size cc ect
or what brand even..
Why i dont know is Because im green/new to vintage chainsaws scene

But i have been reading this sites previous posted threads trying to learn ,,

I want a bigger saw i know that but i dont know which brand to choose????

I mean i want a saw i can still find parts for and repair myself to
and also i want to be able to use it for fire wood or general use.,
i dont mind some weight but dont want a crazy amount either ,,
Maybe im better off with a new saw but i really dont like the new look of the new stuff out there..it looks like chinese junk to me..

I guess im just fussy...I like the Metal look of the big cc vintage work horses!
Oh also i dont want to mod it out i want to find one stock..
Help me out please
I dont care if a saw a 100 years old as long as it works good and does
what its made to do!
Any advise on what saw im looking for is appreciated or what saw you would choose..
and thanks
sledrat!

That's a hard one but first choice would be a Mac 101B, second a Mac 797 or Dolmar 166, third is Mac 125, and fourth is a Stihl 090 in regular or G form, And fifth is a Jonny 111S. I'm not a Homelite guy or a 2100 or 3100 would come to mind. Sorry I refuse to have "just one".

Ok thanks for your advise
But Now how available is say a Mac 797? Is it a common saw or rare?
how much are they used normally?

i searched a Mac 797 sounds mean but looks like you would have to be as strong as a silver back gorilla to lug it around in the bush lol however i would try.

I would love to have a 100 saws and one day maybe but sometimes i like to try and focus on one at time ..:)
To find the ultimate perfect saw must be rewarding too?

You were talking vintage and big so a 797 is covered under those parameters. Now what size do you consider big? Big to me is 7 cube and larger but some folks will consider a 5 or 6 cube big. For parts availability go for a Mac 125 or a Stihl 090. You can still get most new parts for a 090 and 125 parts are plentiful through Ebay.
Go for a Mac sp81, 800, or 850 if you want to pack a saw around and still want it metal. Those are only 82cc and weigh less than a 066.

I've got a Homelite SuperXP 1020 Auto, great saw at 100cc. I also have a Pioneer 650, an amazing saw at 103cc and tough as nails! Any vintage saw will probably serve you well, but as previously stated, I refuse to have just 1.

I will go out on a limb but i think there are some differences in opinion on what big is. For me the mac 125 is a big saw where i think the op would be happy with something like a stihl 045/056 for cutting fire wood

I like your thinking folks...
good points will keep them in mind..! Vintage stihl must be very nice to!
forsure,, Ok to add one more dynamics to this thread
ok i play around with old motor bikes alot old ones
i know quite abit about old Hondas street and trail cb ct cub dream ect ect nothing over 350cc though..not say bigger bikes are not as good just dont like em..
I find honda motors about the best i have worked on so far
i have found so far for motor design function and parts basically are bullet proof.
if maintained,, why i say this is i find old bikes sitting for 30+ years and basically clean carbs points and they are goood to go some dont even smoke yet! ...anyways
Ok so now what brand would you consider in the vintage chain saw world to be as equal in quality dependablilty and workmanship as Vintage honda?

This leads me to ask Did honda ever make a Chainsaw? i know they made a vintage snowbile which was a flop but problly still runs ect lol
Sorry my mind wander when
inspired ;)

luv them old saws! ha!

Also i thank you all for your help...

found this but dont know if this a true honda or home created

I have one large, vintage saw. It is a Stihl 070. At 106cc it has a big engine. It also has lots of age making it vintage and it weighs about as much as a VW Beetle. Couldn't ask for more because if it was more I couldn't lift it and its 41" bar.

I didn't know much about all of the big mag saws until I joined the forum, but if I had to pick now it would be a Pioneer P62. Every video I have ever watched of them amazed me as to how strong they run.

To the OP, I would have as big a saw as I could find for the least amount of $$. For me currently that is a Stihl 075, at 111 cc it has plenty of snoose for the 36"'roller nose bar, and can handle up to a 60" bar for the larger jobs. I am still looking for that 797 barn find though! For a real good fire wooder on the cheep, I really like my PM700 with the 28" B/C! It's power to weight is really nice, very comparable to any new saw built today, only I think it has a touch more power than the new saws and cuts just as fast or faster than any I have run.
